I learnt recently of the way Greek mythology personified Hope into a character called Elpis in the story of Pandora’s Box. But rather than seeing it as an ‘evil thing’ which might hold you in a world of tormenting yourself, I see Hope as something very good. It keeps me positive and it keeps me moving forward and it keeps my heart protected from despair. I suppose, in many ways, having Hope is a creative process of being able to imagine things differently and peacefully holding out for those changes. Perhaps, without Hope, we’d be too satisfied to make-do without reaching ahead.
“Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul.
And sings the tune
Without the words,
And never stops at all.”
Emily Dickinson (1830 - 1886)
