Day Five in Uganda

I took some photos of the church this morning when I went to Mass, just to show you what a beautiful setting it is in.  I met Father Ignatius afterwards and he was so happy to see me that he gave me four avocados, each the size of a coconut.

Then it was back for a quick cup of tea before braving the long, bone-shaking journey in several taxi vans (and a boda-boda ride thrown in) to Nabbingo.  Here we visited a  girl called Maria whom Teopista and Lawrence semi-adopted 7 years ago to sponsor her through school as her own family couldn't manage it.  Maria attends Trinity College, which sits on an incredible plot.  It was a day to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the school and it was very subdued despite the gloriously coloured outfits.  Families had brought along picnics for their children in the school but an angry man on the gate with a tightly rolled up newspaper was having all the bags checked and seized the food, saying that the parents could reclaim it on their way out.  Well this all seemed a bit unfair until Teopista explained that there had recently been a spate of nasty parents seeking revenge by sending in poisoned food with their children who were instructed not to eat it but to pass it on to the child of an enemy family.

If I didn't ever have to go to Kampala again I would be happy.  I think I passive smoked 20,000 exhausts today.  The evidence is up my nostrils.  It isn't surprising that lung infections are rife here.

This is a picture of Teopista's little kitchen.  The stove is on the floor and this is what our meals are cooked on.  They are really lucky to have this undercover space.  Most people along the street are cooking outside.
