Fussing and Fiddling

“Kate, could you stop fiddling with those please. That’s your final warning now.”

We were learning how to convert a length from one unit of measurement to another. While it may seem a very simple task for us, it is a complex concept for the children and I was having to work hard to be clear and keep them on the right train of thought.

“Kate, you were warned. Hand the stickers over. Thank you.”

They covered her entire homework diary. Cows with wobbly eyes. Monkeys that you scratch and they smell of bananas. Seals textured like velvet. Ducks that you press and they squeak. Hearts that you touch and they change colour with the heat of your finger. Stars and planets that glow in the dark. Angels and fairies that reflect the light. Fruits that were filled with some sort of glittery gel.

How the blinking hell was my Maths lesson ever going to be able to compete with them? A wave of nostalgia rushed over me. I made the suggestion that said wonderful stickers would be better displayed in a sticker album like the one I had as a child. They could then be enjoyed at break time rather than in my lessons. I handed the diary back to her with my eyebrows raised with high expectations.

Kate looked up at me, smiled, and offered me a sticker of...

a whale.
