Okay, so I finally got around to having a look at the viola part for the Mahler Symphony No 1 which I was meant to be playing in on Saturday, with rehearsals all day.
I downloaded the music so I could practise along with it... Yep, I had it all going on... the music going, my bow going and my fingers going all like hell and I thought I was doing really quite well.
Then I decided to turn off the recording and to practise on my own.
I would like to add at this point that it is really REALLY hard music, with keys and tempos changing all the time and ridiculously fast passages up in the highest registers of the fingerboard. Anyway.. needless to say, without the Royal Philharmonic playing along with me, it all sounded fairly crap. In fact, it sounded extremely crap. So hideously unharmonious that my eyes were watering.
Yes, I would happily go as far as saying that it is the worst noise I have ever heard myself make. Horrified, but also extremely amused by my new incompetance... I admit defeat and reach for a large glass of brandy.
Toot-toot...
